For years, Mu Cang Chai in Vietnam’s Northwest mountains has been celebrated as a visual paradise of cascading rice terraces. Today, this iconic landscape is transforming into one of Southeast Asia’s top destinations for adventure travel, sports, and cultural immersion.

From late August through early next year, Mu Cang Chai comes alive with thrilling events—from tandem paragliding off high mountain passes to ultra-trail runs across golden valleys and winter blossom festivals.

Why Visit Mu Cang Chai This Season?

Unlike standard sightseeing trips, visiting Mu Cang Chai during harvest season offers active ways to experience nature:

  • Adrenaline & Action: Fly tandem with professional pilots or run along heritage rice fields.

  • Authentic Local Culture: Participate in traditional ethnic Thai rice-pounding ceremonies in Tu Le Valley.

  • Year-Round Beauty: Experience the dramatic shift from golden autumnal rice fields to vibrant pink winter blooms.

Festival 'Flying Over the Golden Season' & Tu Le Green Rice Festival
Late August – Early September
  • Paragliding Festival: Capping off the national holiday season, hundreds of pilots launch from Khau Pha Pass (1,268 meters above sea level), gliding high above Tu Le and Lim Mong valleys. Visitors can book tandem flights with certified instructors—no prior flying experience required.

  • Tu Le Cốm (Young Green Rice) Festival: In Tu Le Valley, the local Thai people harvest rare Nếp Tan sticky rice to roast and pound into fragrant green flakes by hand. Visitors can watch and participate in traditional green-rice making alongside local artisans.

Trail & Chill Season
August 22 – 23

A relaxed wellness and running weekend designed for families and casual runners. Participants jog along scenic rice field paths in the morning, soak in Tu Le hot mineral springs in the afternoon, and sample authentic Northwest cuisine by evening.

Mu Cang Chai Ultra Trail
Early October (Oct 1 – 3)

One of Vietnam's most scenic trail races takes runners straight through the famous rice terraces of La Pan Tan and Che Cu Nha. Multiple distances are available, accommodating amateur joggers up to seasoned ultramarathon runners.

Tớ Dày (Wild Cherry Blossom) Festival
December – January

As the harvest season concludes, winter brings a dramatic transformation. Tớ Dày flowers (wild mountain cherry blossoms) blanket the mountainsides in brilliant pink, offering a quiet, crisp mountain getaway.
